Diseases of the locomotor system, whether congenital, degenerative or traumatic, are often severely disabling conditions; as a matter of fact, they have a direct effect on a person’s autonomy and self-sufficiency and, as a result, quality of life.
For many years now the GVM Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department has dealt with the treatment of and recovery from traumatism of the musculoskeletal system. The main pathologies treated are degenerative diseases of major joints (hips, knees and shoulders) that have undergone replacement surgery and traumatically-induced joint diseases typical of Sports Medicine such as meniscal, ligament and cartilage disorders of the knee, injured shoulder tendons and ligaments, femoroacetabular impingement syndromes, and damage to the cartilage and ligaments of the ankle.
The Coordinator of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department Dr. Raul Zini is a prominent surgeon, has been a professor in the Specialisation Course at the Universities of Milan and Siena since 2003, and is the former President of the Italian Society of Arthroscopy. Professionals connected to the Department also include Dr. Enrico Castellacci, Medical Director for the Italian National Football Team and professor at the Graduate School of the Universities of Siena and Pisa.
